This chapter explains how to advertise, interview, check references and hire employees without running afoul of the discrimination laws, the ADA, Immigration Reform Act and certain common law requirements, such as the doctrine of "negligent hiring." It also discusses correct use of promotion-from within policies, the use of medical exams, and the need for maintaining employment-at-will status.

 
Workplace Violence
 

This chapter is unique in that it is one of the few available dealing with this subject. One of the author's has considerable experience in lecturing and training on this subject and this chapter is full of practical recommendations. Workplace violence is of increasing concern for many employers and learning to recognize the potential for violent conduct by employees and preventing same is the aim and purpose of this chapter.
